Artist Development and Community Assistant | The intern would work within our small staff team to engage with the artists in our various overlapping communities of practice, supporting them in development and distribution of their work.

Location

Bill Scott Sculpture Centre, 21 Hawthornvale, Edinburgh, EH6 4JT

In-person (there may be some scope for occasional remote work).

Project

The Intern would work within our small staff team to engage with the artists in our various overlapping communities of practice, supporting them in development and distribution of their work. The intern will make connections across the spectrum of the organisation’s activity to gain a better understanding of a multi layered, imbricated programme that supports research, production and learning. This will involve engagement in the research ideas and planning behind our programming, interviewing and supporting both local artists (from our studios and membership) and international artists (through our residency programme) as well as observing and supporting artists on our engagement programme.

Outputs

Interviews with new Studio Holders and Residency artists and profiles created on our website; related social media activity.

  • Involvement in the Summer Programme events including planning, communications, hosting and delivery.
  • One member's event or trip, taking the lead on suggesting and developing content.
  • Support Curator for Research in hosting residency artists including introducing them to the studio community.
  • Monday Member social media activity, encouraging members to share their news and images.
  • Be involved in either the promotion of or the selection of the Hawthornvale Space open call to Members and support one of the artists to make their presentation.
  • Consider and be supported to do write ups for other platforms including: https://www.ourcreativevoice.scot

Timescale

Start date (or must start by) 20/01/24

End date (or must end by)  expected to end around 31/09/23

We might be able to be flexible about this but one pattern could be: 2 days a week for around 30 weeks with a couple of more intensive weeks at key points in the summer. This is approx. 7 months. An alternative could be a full time block of time.

Benefits to the Researcher

The Intern will get a hands on and intellectually stimulating insight into artist development work, including how ideas and practical making are developed in tandem and how individuals and communities of practice interact.

They will gain insight into the curatorial work involved as well as the administrative, organising and communications tasks needed.

They will also meet a lot of people in our immediate communities and wider networks within the sector and the city
