Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums

Published: 4 October 2023

We are embarking on an ambitious 5 year plan to catalogue, digitise and publish our medieval archaeology collections as we work towards a major exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery.

Organisation

Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums

Location

Aberdeen Treasure Hub, Granitehill Road, Aberdeen, AB16 7AX

Project

Re-visiting Aberdonian Coin Hoards

An ongoing collaboration is continuing to open up our Aberdeen’s Burgh records - the earliest and most complete body of surviving records of any Scottish town, with a near continuous run of council registers from 1398 to the present. Such is the value and significance of these records that in July 2013 the eight volumes covering the period 1398 to 1511 were recognised by UNESCO as being of outstanding historical importance to the UK.

This internship will focus on our collection of medieval coin hoards, improving our understanding of them and making them more accessible by improving catalogue entries, writing enhanced interpretation and digitisation. They will also help the team research where material from hoards found in the 1800s and early 1900s has gone. Much of this material was dispersed after finding.

Outputs

Researchers can expect to be:

  • Creating accurate records on the museum database
  • Matching up objects with historical accounts
  • Creating social media content as appropriate
  • Reporting or summarising the project for our webpages

With other potential outputs including:

  • Curating an online exhibition
  • Contributing to events in our venues
  • Public talks based on the subject

Timescale

This will be a hybrid placement, in line with current working practice for existing staff. A Council laptop will be provided to ensure access staff networks and resources e.g. museum database.

In venue working will take place primarily at Aberdeen Treasure Hub (mostly Tuesday-Friday but weekend working is possible).
