Scottish Outreach and Impact in Philosophy Prize 2016

Published: 30 August 2016

Deadline: 25 October 2016. SGSAH will award a new prize (£500) for the best Outreach or Impact proposal related to the actual or potential SGSAH-funded PhD project. This competition is designed to encourage people to think about outreach and impact, and how to best integrate these elements into their philosophical research.

What: The Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities will award a new prize (£500) for the best Outreach or Impact proposal related to the actual or potential SGSAH-funded PhD project.

When: All entries must be received by 25 October 2016.

Prizes will be awarded at the Outreach and Impact in Philosophy workshop on 30 November, in Surgeon’s Hall, Edinburgh. Finalists will pitch their proposal to the audience, so entrants must be available on the day. Applicants’ travel expenses will be refunded.

Why: The nature of a lot of Philosophy research sometimes makes it seem hard to engage non-academics. At the same time, outreach and impact are part of the new reality for any successful academic. This competition is designed to encourage people to think about outreach and impact, and how to best integrate these elements into their philosophical research.

Who: All current SGSAH philosophy students, and all philosophy applicants to SGSAH in 2016/17 are eligible to enter.

How: Submit a proposal (1000 words max) to t.vierkant@ed.ac.uk by 25 October 2016.

You’ll want to show you have considered the following:

  • What impact do you want to achieve?
  • Who is your audience? Why will the activity appeal to them?
  • How will you engage this audience? What do you want them to learn or experience? How will you measure impact?
  • Is your activity realistic? Have you thought about timescale, workload, and resources?
