Project

Communications at Glasgow Zine Library 2024

Glasgow Zine Library is a self-publishing library and community arts space in Govanhill, South Glasgow. We recently relocated and aim to develop community engagement in our new space. Our mission is to increase arts access and participation for marginalised groups, provide opportunities for skill-sharing, celebrate zine and DIY arts culture, and support the creative development of our South Glasgow community. We do this through our year-round community arts programme, library services, free arts resources, artistic development and youth training opportunities, and volunteer programme.

Our collection holds 2,000+ zines (self-published magazines), and we organise the annual Glasgow Zine Fest, celebrating DIY culture. In 2022 we had 4,314 audiences and library visitors across 119 events, delivered in partnership with 245 arts facilitators and access workers. All our activities are free or pay-what-you-can, to ensure affordability, and our access provision includes BSL, captioning and audio description.

We are seeking a Communications Assistant to support our Marketing and Communications Coordinator as we gear up for our annual DIY arts festival in Glasgow next year. The role will involve providing communications admin support, researching and copywriting for online/offline content, including our social media channels (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, with over 26,000 followers) and our website, supporting with event listings on Eventbrite, writing our audience and Patreon newsletters, getting to know our zine collection and creating copy celebrating this, and supporting comms (including our printed programme) for our national DIY arts festival - Glasgow Zine Fest.

Design and illustration experience/skills are desirable but not required.

Our venue is wheelchair accessible. We are particularly interested to hear from local applicants and those underrepresented in the arts.

Benefits to the Researcher

Interns will benefit from training, developing sector skills (organisation, team work, communication), communications experience, and increased confidence in the sector. The internship will give them experience and skills relevant beyond the third sector, as every sector often advertises for communications roles. The intern will also benefit from meeting new people, making industry connections, collaborating with like-minded creatives and community members, and getting to know the creative and third sectors.

Key Relationships

This post will be supported by our Marketing and Communications Coordinator and Deputy Director.
