Published: 11 May 2023

Brought to you by our Knowledge Exchange Hubs, this workshop will explore ways to map what academic cultural impact could mean in your doctoral research and look towards engaging approaches and tools for dissemination and knowledge exchange.

Friday 23rd of June

1.30pm - 4.30pm

Proclaim Room, The Studio

Dr Michael Johnson & Dr Marianne McAra

Dr Michael Johnson (CE Hub): Creative Economy Leadership Fellow & Lecturer

Michael a design Research Fellow in the creative economy with experience in applying design-led mapping and modelling methods as part of strategic and participatory engagement in regional, sectoral and sustainable development.

Dr Marianne McAra (CCE Hub): Research and Teaching Fellow

Marianne is a Teaching Research fellow at the Glasgow School of Art in the area of design-led innovation. Her research practice is underpinned by Participatory Design approaches, and focused on developing innovative tools and techniques for creative engagement and new forms of studio-based collaboration.

About this Session

This is an introduction to academic and cultural impact for students engaged in research and collaboration for/with social and cultural institutions (e.g. the creative industries; cultural heritage and museums; policy making; the public and third sector). The workshop covers ways to identify the ‘what’ and ‘why’ by reflecting on opportunities for impact (i.e. the difference research can make and who for), and what this might look like in your research. We will then look at the ‘how’ through exploring approaches to disseminate research in engaging and equitable ways. Throughout the session, we will be sharing examples and insights from our experiences as post-doc researchers. The session will be discursive in nature, with time dedicated to group discussions and individual reflection.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Have been introduced to a context mapping technique informed by actor-network theory;
  • Reflected on their own research and considered ways and means of impact appropriate to their contexts;
  • Explored a range of engagement tools and approaches to support dissemination and knowledge exchange.

Who might be interested?

Doctoral researchers at any stage of their PhD studies who are interested to explore what academic and cultural impact might look and feel like in their own work. This workshop will be relevant and useful to a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts as the methods and methodologies used have a wide range of connections and applications.

Participant access requirements

Please have to hand a brief (verbal) overview of your research and research questions to share.
