Principles for Engagement
Principles for Engagement
SGSAH’s mission is to work together with doctoral researchers in a caring, ethical and reflective professional environment, whilst demonstrating commitment to generating and mobilising knowledge across a scholarly, professional and public communities.
SGSAH’s Principles for Engagement outline the behaviour expected of researchers, teams and facilitators to foster an inclusive, accessible and respectful training environment.
- Welcome and respect the diversity of voices in the room
- Use fellow participants’ and facilitators’ chosen name and pronouns
- Honour confidentiality and contribute to everyone feeling safe to share
- Hold space and pay attention to silences, including what is not being said
- Have brave conversations and lean into discomfort (as much as we can)
- Respect your peers’ lived experiences and understand that they are not obliged to share these experiences, for example to educate others
- Be compassionate
- Be mindful of the impact of what we say and how we say it
- Encourage self-reflection and curiosity about our own reactions and perspectives
- Practice and respect self-care
These Principles are underpinned by the University of Glasgow’s Dignity at Work & Student Policy and Community Strategy 2025.
