Mind Waves

Organisation

Mind Waves mental health charity, exploring an asset-based approach to mental health through animation.

Location

We envisage this being mostly a remote post. It’s possible that there will be some face to face workshops, which would be held in central Glasgow.

We would offer support through online meetings and face to face if the researcher finds that helpful.

We particularly welcome disabled applicants.

Project

We’d like to recruit someone to work with a group of people with lived experience of mental ill health to create simple animations on the assets and strengths that these experiences can bring.

For example, during the covid lockdowns, many people told us that their previous experiences of being isolated and managing their mental health meant they were better equipped to deal with the challenges.

We will provide training and software for animation production and no previous experience is required.

Outputs

We’d like to produce 2-3 short animations, informed by and co-created with people who have lived experience of mental illness.

We’d like the researcher to work closely with a small group of people to explore these ideas through workshops, which could be face to face or online.

Timescale

Start date - January 2023

End date - Flexible, but likely July- December 2023

1- 2.5 days per week, to be arranged with applicant

Benefits to the Host

Mind Waves is a Glasgow charity that works with people who have lived experience of mental ill health. We use collaborative storytelling to improve mental wellbeing and tackle stigma around mental health.

People tell us that living with a mental health problem has helped them to develop strengths that are an asset in other areas of their lives e.g in relationships, at work, in creative pursuits

We’d like a skilled researcher to explore the experience, scope and limits of these assets and how people can benefit from them.

Benefits to the Researcher

We’ll provide training and software for producing simple animations, which is a real concrete skill.

The researcher will gain experience working directly with groups and individuals, using interviews and other creative methods to explore ideas.

They will also produce a concrete and creative research output in the form of the animations.

Key Relationships

The key relationship will be with our Chief Executive Rosie McIntosh, who will provide training in animation skills as well as offering support in facilitating workshops.

There will be direct work with people who have lived experience of mental ill health, in a group setting or in one-to-one interviews.

There will be relationships with our Communications Co-ordinator and Podcast Co-ordinator, both of who started in our organisation through an internship programme and can offer peer support.
