Non-Academic Writing - How2Glu

Thursday 23rd of June

1.15pm - 4.15pm

Room 7, University of Strathclyde, TIC Building, 99 George St, Glasgow G1 1RD

Dr Sabina Strachan of How2Glu

This workshop will help you understand the key differences between academic writing and non-academic writing, identify and adapt to different audiences, and work through practical ways to approach writing for non-academic audiences.

We’ll look at different kinds of writing – from blogs aimed at specialist audiences, to print articles for general audiences, to briefing notes for partner organisations – and different kinds of media. We will work through glucardTM tools that will help you understand communication preferences that will suit different audiences, how to research parallels and templates, how to identify and communicate key messages, and how to plan and structure your writing.

We will also share reasons why translating your research for different purposes and audiences contributes to research impact, how this practice will also help improve the accessibility and useability of your academic writing and why it is a key transferable skill for post-PhD career paths.

Sabina will share her experience of adapting her own research, writing for different audiences, graphically illustrate concepts and visually demonstrate tools. There will be time for Q&A.
