Thinking ecologically: relationality, difference and materiality

Thursday 23rd of June

2pm - 4pm

Room 3, University of Strathclyde, TIC Building, 99 George St, Glasgow G1 1RD

Chris Fremantle (Robert Gordon University)

This session is focused on the complex issues of relationality, difference and materiality in ecological thinking. Relationality is a critical theme for researchers often translating into participatory and co-creative approaches. Difference is equally significant, drawing out complexity and challenging norms. Materiality can create new understandings through its resistances. The session will be a forum for discussion amongst participants, drawing on the experiences and expertise to deepen and complexify understandings, drawing on the writings of Karen Barad, Gregory Bateson, Donna Haraway, Tim Ingold, Tim Morton, Deborah Bird Rose and Anna Tsing amongst others. The aim of the session is to consider whether ecological thinking needs a material dimension, and what that might be. This session will take an arts-based practice-led approach and consider materiality in relation to PhD research specifically. Instructions for preparation will be sent in advance of the session.
