Holding Audiences to account: Forms of Participation in Performance and Interactive Art
Monday 20th of June
3pm - 6pm
Blast Theory make interactive art to explore social and political questions. The group’s work places the public at the centre of unusual and sometimes unsettling experiences, to create new perspectives and open up the possibility of change. In this workshop, Blast Theory artist, Nick Tandavanitj will show how the group incorporates play and user testing in their creative process to develop novel forms of participatory performance and to structure interactivity.
Blast Theory have shown work at the Venice Biennale, Tribeca Film Festival, ICC in Tokyo, Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin, the Barbican and Tate Britain. Commissioners include Channel 4, Sundance Film Festival and the Royal Opera House. The group work closely with researchers and scientists and have collaborated with the Mixed Reality Lab at the University of Nottingham since 1997, co-authoring over 45 research papers.
Nick Tandavanitj studied Art & Social Context at Dartington College of Arts and was an Arts and Humanities Research Council Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham researching artistic and social applications of mobile games. Nick Tandavanitj is one of three artists in Blast Theory alongside Matt Adams and Ju Row Farr. Nick's focus on design processes and creative computing contributes to the group’s unique mix of skills in structuring interactivity and narrative.
