Online Workshop: This doctoral training session explores the practical and methodological issues attendant to writing historical biography. Biographers Nicolson and Penman will lead discussion drawing on a selection of exemplary biographies of the famous and obscure, and of places and ideas, as well as participants’ recommendations, while using presentation slides as an aide memoire. Biographies on display cover a range of historical periods (from medieval to modern) and areas (Scottish, British, European, and American). Participants are requested to undertake some short preparatory reading and consider methodological problems of undertaking historical biography and prosopography in their respective research projects. Readings will be available to download in advance and session leaders will provide general advice in response to participants’ queries.

Participants: Ten places only for doctoral students based at SGSAH member institutions.  Attendance is free but advance booking is essential.
