A hands-on workshop for Modern Languages PGR students working with visual culture and media

Presenters: Professor Edward Welch and Dr Jesse Barker

Modern Languages fields have traditionally centred on linguistic and literary study, but today many scholars work with visual culture and a variety of media forms. In this workshop we will discuss critical approaches to different types of visual media, tailored to the interests of participants. We could consider (audio)visual forms such as film, television and photography but also print or digital media that emphasise visual interface, such as newspapers, magazines, blogs or social media. We will also discuss broader research methodologies when working across an ecosystem of media forms as a way of exploring a topic.

The workshop will be a hands-on session, so participants are asked to bring along some visual material they are studying, ideally something they find challenging.

Participants are also asked to send in advance a brief summary of their PhD topic, with an indication of how and why they are using visual media.

This workshop is organised by the Modern Languages Catalyst. It is suitable for Modern Languages doctoral students whose research includes elements of visual culture and media.
