In this masterclass, Dr. Mila Zuo and Dr. William Brown shall consider the way in which western thought has long since been the product of a presumed and ocularcentric sense of detached observation. We shall point, however, to the ways in which developments in western thought, ranging from neuroscience to physics, point to the implosion of such 'distal' modes of knowledge, while also pointing to how non-western philosophies can help us further to evolve more 'holistic' ways of thinking. In particular, we shall consider how the west has sought to shape a 'global' sensorium, whereby western sensibilities have become dominant, especially with regard to taste. Again, however, a non-western approach to taste can help us to deprogramme this western bias, and help us sensorially to understand the world in what to the west are 'new' ways, even as they belong to ancient and now-abject epistemologies in other parts of the world.

This workshop is organised by the Media Comms, Film and TV Catalyst, but MA, MLitt, MPhil, & PhD candidates from cognate disciplines are also very welcome to register.
