Discipline+ Catalyst Event: Digital History: New Approaches in Historical Research

Event Date: 11/11

Location: Scottish Universities Insight Institute, University of Strathclyde, Collins Building, 22 Richmond Street, Glasgow

This event, jointly sponsored by the Economic and Social History pathway of the SGSSS and the History catalyst of the SGSAH, has deliberately been framed as a set of taster sessions in the developing field of digital histories. This is a rapidly growing area of historical research in both traditional historical fields and in economic and social history, as well as being of potential relevance to others in the social sciences. It will cover both the research process and dissemination of research findings, potentially including sessions on digital databases and datasets, social network analysis, QGIS mapping, digital text editing, digital reconstructions of historic sites and technology-enhanced learning and teaching.

The aim is to introduce students with little or no experience in these fields to the potential that they offer for historical research. The event also seeks to raise awareness of the different expectations that humanities/social science scholars and computer scientists bring to digital histories and how to make their goals align. By the end of the workshop participants will have gained an introduction to a range of cutting-edge approaches which apply digital methods of analysis and dissemination to the field of historical research.
