SGSAH 2017 Doctoral Internships Competition

Open to any doctoral researcher in arts and humanities regardless of funding source.

The SGSAH 2017 Doctoral Internships Competition will open for applications on 4 September. SGSAH organises internships and artistic residencies for PhD students to spend up to three months at partner host organisations. Projects can be worked full time, part time or flexibly in blocks. Internships are paid at the current RCUK stipend rate of £14,553 (pro rata).

There will be 21 Hosting Partners for the 2017 competition. Full details of the projects will be announced on 4 September.  See what projects were funded in 2016/17 here.

Meet the Host

Come to our annual Meet the Host Event in Edinburgh on Wednesday 6 September and talk to the hosts themselves about the work they do and the role an intern/artist in residence will play in their organisation. Register here by Wednesday 30 August to secure your place. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

The programme is open to arts and humanities PhD students in Scotland, regardless of funding source. Any doctoral researcher that meets the following criteria can benefit from this programme:

  • You are registered at SGSAH member HEI;
  • You are in 2nd or early in your 3rd year* (full time equivalent) at 1 October 2017;
  • You are studying an arts and humanities discipline. The AHRC’s subject coverage is here;
  • You do not hold an Applied Research Collaborative Studentship or Creative Economies Studentship;
  • You have not already undertaken an internship or residency through SGSAH’s programme.

*You are not eligible if you are within 6 months of the end of your study period or writing up.

Closing date

The closing date for applications is Monday 2 October 2017 at 5pm

How to make an application

Applications open on 4 September

Applicants should download and complete the relevant application form (this is different for internships and residencies) and email to along with a copy of their CV. It is important your supervisor supports your application.

Applicants can apply for as many opportunities as they wish. Please complete a separate application for each.

Assessment of applications is a two stage process: there will be an assessment of the written application and applicants successful at this stage will be invited to interview. Both stages of the assessment process will be undertaken by the host organisation.
